Capricorn New Moon Overview
The Capricorn New Moon happens just before the 2025 new year begins. It's a good time to pause and rest as we enter a new cycle. Capricorn is known for its ambitious and disciplined nature and encourages practical steps toward long-term goals.
During the Capricorn New Moon phase, evaluate the structures in your life and determine what aligns with your highest aspirations. Whether you’re setting new moon intentions for personal growth or preparing for new challenges in the new year, this lunation supports thoughtful planning and sustained effort.
In Capricorn, this New Moon brings a serious and goal-oriented tone, ideal for reviewing the past year and solidifying your plans for 2025. It emphasizes resilience and grounded action, urging you to create strategies that are not only achievable but also deeply aligned with your values.
While the energy is determined and focused, it also invites reflection on where flexibility and adaptability can balance Capricorn's natural drive for control. This is because Saturn continues to be the center of a t-square with the Mercury and Jupiter opposition (more on that below).
This New Moon sets the stage for growth and preparation through quiet introspection and deliberate action. With significant planetary configurations adding layers of complexity, it’s a good time to use Capricorn’s steadiness to navigate the current dynamic energies.
There is a caution with the planet of action Mars, opposite Pluto, the planet of power, big change, and purification. Power struggles may erupt. An opposition is two bodies looking at each other, which can bring about projection, needing to choose one side or the other, or learning about self through others.

New Moon Conjunct Sun (9° Capricorn)
This New Moon’s conjunction with the Sun in Capricorn sets a serious and goal-oriented tone, encouraging reflection and recalibration. Capricorn’s disciplined energy supports taking stock of your progress over the past year and creating a focused plan for 2025.
This is a time for setting clear, practical intentions that align with long-term aspirations. The energy is determined and realistic, making it ideal for reaffirming commitments or crafting new strategies.
Quiet reflection during this time can help illuminate the steps needed to climb your personal mountains in the year ahead.
Venus in Aquarius Square Uranus in Taurus
The tension between Venus and Uranus can spark unexpected encounters and unusual experiences in relationships. Venus in Aquarius values freedom and individuality, while Uranus in Taurus challenges traditional structures.
This square may bring surprises or disruptions, highlighting the need to balance stability with innovation. It’s a great time to explore new perspectives, but be mindful of impulsive decisions or reactions, especially concerning love, money, and social dynamics.
Mercury Retrograde Post-Shadow Phase
Mercury retrograde ended on December 15, but its post-shadow phase continues until January 2, 2025. This window offers the opportunity to integrate insights gained during the retrograde.
Use this time to wrap up revisions, implement changes, and align projects or relationship issues with clarity before Mercury moves fully out of its shadow. Communication and technology issues may still linger but should gradually resolve.
Mercury Retrograde Cycle Dates:
Pre-shadow Start: November 7, 2024
Retrograde: November 25 or 26, 2024 (22° Sagittarius)
Direct: December 15, 2024 (6° Sagittarius)
Post-shadow Ends: January 2, 2025
Degrees: 22 to 6 degrees Sagittarius
Mercury in Sagittarius Opposite Jupiter in Gemini
This prolonged opposition between Mercury and Jupiter retrograde has been active since mid-November, indicating themes of big ideas and scattered thoughts. The opposition between Mercury and Jupiter highlights the tension between visionary thinking and logical execution.
Mercury and Jupiter Opposition in T-Square with Saturn
Saturn’s involvement brings structure and discipline to the opposition of Mercury Jupiter, helping to ground lofty ideas into actionable steps. It underscores the need to balance ambition with realism, as over-committing, scattered thoughts, or overestimating could lead to burnout.
Mutable Energy: The mutable nature of this t-square invites adaptability and creativity when navigating challenges. It’s an excellent time for brainstorming but requires effort to turn ideas into tangible results.
Mars Retrograde
Mars continues to be in retrograde motion as we close out 2024 and weclome 2025. Mars retrograde is about how we use and conserve our physical energy. The Mars retrograde cycle began December 6 and ends February 24, 2025, a cycle that occurs every two years.
It started its retrograde motion in Leo and will move back into Cancer after the new year. The retrograde period is a time to reassess activities and commitments and where adjustments may be needed in how you take physical action, what goes on or off your calendar, and how you find determination from within.
The themes and issues that arose back in October and November offer a preview of the key themes likely to resurface during Mars's retrograde period.
Unlike Mercury's retrograde cycle, which brings up key themes regarding communication, learning, commerce, and logistics, Mars's retrograde impacts our energy and actions.
It can indicate where you are spread too thin or where you need to adjust your energy reserves. Things may need to be cut out of your life or schedule. Mars retrograde is a good time to evaluate where and how you take action.
During Mars retrograde, you may feel a decrease in motivation or recognize the need to eliminate distractions from your routine to take action on what truly matters. Pay attention to what is happening with your physical energy and where you apply it.

Mars Retrograde: Moves into Cancer (starting January 6)
As Mars moves from fiery Leo to the nurturing waters of Cancer on January 6, the energy shifts from outward expression to a more indirect approach.
Reevaluate Action: Retrogrades encourage reflection, and Mars retrograde is no different. This is a good time to evaluate how you take action, whether it’s effective, and what may need to be cut from your life to maintain balance.
Emotional Expression in Cancer: Mars in Cancer can bring passive-aggressive tendencies, volatile emotions, or a build-up of energy that needs healthy outlets. Regularly releasing tension through physical activity or creative projects can prevent explosive or dramatic outbursts.
Cancer House Focus: Look to the Cancer-ruled house in your chart for insights into where this retrograde may be urging you to reassess and redirect your energy.
Mars Retrograde Cycle Dates:
Pre-retrograde shadow: October 5, 2024 (17° Cancer)
Retrograde begins: December 6, 2024 (6° Leo)
Moves into Cancer: January 6, 2025
Direct: February 24, 2025 (17° Cancer)
Post-retrograde shadow ends: May 2, 2025 (6° Leo)
Degrees: 6 Leo to 17 Cancer
Mars Opposite Pluto (Leo to Aquarius)
The opposition between Mars and Pluto creates powerful energy dynamics, often centered on themes of control, power struggles, and self-expression versus group dynamics. This can be a period where unresolved tensions surface, leading to confrontations or revelations.
While the shadow side may involve bullying or power plays, the higher potential lies in recognizing shared values and working collaboratively. Those with strong empathy may deeply feel the contrast between selfishness and unity in the collective sphere.
Protecting your soul and spirit from negative energy is important.
Mars Trine Neptune (Water Signs)
Mars trine Neptune suggests a fluid and intuitive use of energy. While this alignment may dissipate physical stamina, it supports creative, mystical, and spiritual pursuits. It’s a good time to channel energy into artistic projects, meditation, or compassionate actions.
There is potential for getting lost in daydreams or confusion. Check directions for clarity and stay in the present moment to help retain the connection between your mind and your actions.
Nodes Shifting from Aries-Libra to Virgo-Pisces Axis
On January 11 or 12, depending on where you live, the nodes shift from the Aries-Libra axis to Virgo-Pisces. This transition highlights a collective shift in focus. While the Aries-Libra axis emphasized individuality versus collaboration, the Virgo-Pisces axis shifts attention to vision versus practicality and the tension between critical analysis and big-picture ideals.
Worldly Themes: This shift may bring an increased awareness of how we, as humans, come together to address broader visions and issues of humanity versus the need for detail-oriented and practical approaches.
Personal Impact: On an individual level, the nodes’ influence depends on how they activate your chart. Look for the Virgo and Pisces houses and planetary placements to understand this shift's meaning in your life.
Topics: Service, health, misinformation, and belief systems may all be hot topics during this nodal transit.
For more information on the nodes changing signs, check out the Kepler College video ‘Goodbye 2024, Hello 2025’, where my friend Celeste Brooks talks about it. Celeste has a quote for this transit: ‘Question All, Believe Nothing.’
It’s important to dig under what you read or hear, as misinformation will likely be amplified.

Focus on areas where you want to build resilience, create stability, or climb toward new heights. Use Capricorn’s energy to craft a clear action plan for these intentions, breaking them into achievable steps or using SMART goals. Consider how you can align your personal growth with long-term ambitions.
SMART goals: Specific, measurable, attainable or achievable, relevant (think about your long-term vision), and with a timetable.
Create a ‘Legacy Vision Board’
Tap into Capricorn’s focus on long-term goals and legacy by designing a vision board that reflects what you want to accomplish over the next 5 to 10 years. Include images and words that represent career milestones, personal achievements, and the structures you want to build in your life.
Capricorn’s earthy energy encourages a tangible, grounded approach, so display this board somewhere you’ll see it regularly as a reminder of your aspirations.
Year-End Reflection and Accountability Ritual
Capricorn values structure and responsibility, making this a perfect time to evaluate the past year with a sense of accountability. Write a list of your accomplishments, challenges, and lessons learned in 2024.
Then, identify habits, routines, or structures that no longer serve you in 2025 and write a list of what you will leave behind in 2024. End the ritual by writing a commitment to yourself for the year ahead, focusing on integrity, determination, and disciplined growth.
